Jean Brick rejoined the Department of Linguistics as a full-time staff member in 2006, after an absence of seven years. She has extensive experience in the fields of Applied Linguistics and language teaching and has undertaken consultancies funded by a range of agencies including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and AusAID. These consultancies have involved living and working in China, Indonesia, Thailand, Kiribati, Tonga, Sri Lanka and most recently Maldives.
Jean's teaching areas involve special purpose language and literacy development, including the development of academic literacy, and second language teaching and learning.
Her research interests centre on academic communication and academic literacy development. She is currently engaged in exploring the use of figurative language in introductory lectures in history. She is the author of several books, including China: A Handbook in Intercultural Communication, (2nd ed 2004) and Academic Culture: What you need to know about university study, a second edition of which is due out in mid 2011.
