A/Prof Ilija Casule taught general and Macedonian linguistics, semantics
and semiotics at the University Cyril and Methodius, Skopje, Republic
of Macedonia from 1979-1987, when he joined Macquarie University. From
1987 to 2000 he was affiliated with the School of Modern Languages where
he developed the Macedonian studies program and taught units in Macedonian
language and literature, Slavic historical linguistics and languages in
contact.
In 2001 he joined the Department of Linguistics, where he currently
teaches lexicography, theory of translation, research methodology, translation
from Spanish, historical linguistics and from time to time sociolinguistics,
bilingualism and languages in contact. His research interests are in the
area of languages in contact, especially at the syntactic level, within
the linguistic convergence phenomena in the Balkan Linguistic Alliance,
and further language standardisation and planning, syntax (esp. nominalisation),
poetry translation and Indo-European and Phrygian etymology.
He has also
worked on establishing the Indo-European, i.e. Ancient Balkan origin of
the isolated language Burushaski. He has authored 6 books and over 70
articles in refereed journals.
Dr Casule is the President of the Macedonian Committee within the European
Linguistic Atlas. He is also active as a translator of poetry. Since 1988
he has been on a panel of the National Accreditation Authority for Translating
and Interpreting. Member of the Executive Committee of the Dictionary
Research Centre and of the Australian Linguistic Society. Speaks actively
Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian, Spanish, Russian and has receptive skills
in Bulgarian, Slovenian, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian and Burushaski
