Profile
Phil Chappell has been involved in English Language Teaching, Language in Education/Applied Linguistics and ELT program management and since the early 1990s. He spent over ten years living in Thailand, where he was involved with adult language teaching, language teacher education, curriculum development, program management, distance TESOL education and developing in-service professional development programs. He has continued these interests since returning to Australia, and has recently taught at the University of Wollongong, UTS - INSEARCH, and the Unversity of Sydney.
Phil is currently the convenor of the Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL program, teaching the Language Teaching Methodologies and Linguistics and Language Teaching subjects, as well as overseeing the Practicum in TESOL. His interests in classroom language teaching led to his research at Masters level on teaching spoken English, and at Doctoral level on the role of group work in the second language curriculum. He continues to be interested in intersections of Systemic Functional Linguistic theory, Vygotskyan mediational theory of mind, and Bernstein’s theory of pedagogic communication to enable greater understandings of effective classroom practices in second language teaching and learning, especially the talk of the language classroom. Phil’s doctoral thesis is titled Group Work in the Second Language Classroom: where teaching meets learning in pedagogic discourse.
Phil currently has a strategy for publications based on his recent doctoral thesis, including a book detailing the theoretical framework, and a practical handbook for teachers.
