Profile

Tessa Green directs a number of support services and resources that are provided by the Linguistics Department to its on-campus and distance students. In May 2000, she created LINGLINE, the on-line linguistics newsletter, and has since written more than 60 issues specific to the interests and concerns of staff and postgraduate linguistics students in many countries across the world.

In July 2002, she set up the Linguistics Postgraduate Writing Skills Program which helps students of linguistics improve their writing and communication skills whilst they are enrolled in postgraduate linguistics subjects. Program topics include: approaching assignment questions; structuring and planning assignments; developing and maintaining an argument; plagiarism and referencing issues; critical review writing; strategies for learning ESL/EFL; aspects of pronunciation; prosodic aspects of English and issues of cultural context. This program also offers students a stream of presentation skills workshops for developing their skills and confidence in public speaking, useful both for seminar presentations and conference presentations, and also when seeking positions of employment.

Since July 2003, through the assistance of a Macquarie University Teaching Development Grant, Tessa Green has convened the Linguistics Postgraduate Writing Skills Website which provides linguistics-specific writing skills support on-line to all on-campus and external postgraduate students. She also co-ordinates the on-line development of applied linguistics units through the University's Borderless Development Project.

Tessa Green is co-ordinator of the Academic and Professional Communication Unit (APCU), established in Lingusitics in 2004. The APCU brings together staff who are expert in the areas of Writing Skills, EAP, Language for Specific Purposes, plus Professional Communication and Presentation Skills.

Tessa Green has managed a project developing online e.learning materials for EAP with Beijing Foreign Studies University, and has conducted a needs analysis of the e.learning practices and resources within the Division of Lingusitics and Psychology. In 2008, she is developing a communication skills module for clinical audiologists as part of a Flagship Project which aims to develop a theoretical framework for students to develop professional and clinical skills before clinical placement, and a program for clinical eduators for teaching and facilitation and reporting of student progress.
