Profile

Cheol Ja (Joanne) Jeong's expertise is in the area of simultaneous and consecutive interpreting and translation of Korean and English. She has worked as a freelance conference interpreter and translator for over 15 years, working in international conferences on politics, finance, computer science, telecommunications, medicine, etc. She interpreted for bidding negotiations for Korea High Speed Rail Construction, the biggest construction project in Korean history, from 1992 to 1994. She also interpreted for ministerial and summit meetings during Presidents Kim Young Sam and Kim Dae Jung's state visit to Australia. In addition to interpreting and translation, she had teaching experience at Hankook University of Foreign Studies as part time lecturer from 1986 to 1991.

Dr Jeong convenes interpreting units (TRAN821 and TRAN822: Interpreting Techniques and Interpreting Practice) in the Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Translation and Interpreting, including TRAN832 (Public Speaking) and TRAN823 (Language Transfer in the Media). Her main research interests are in interpreting and translation, English teacher education, curriculum development and evaluation, and she has supervised and examined a number of MA dissertations in the program.

While Dr Jeong has been active in practicing interpreting and translation for many organizations, including Korean and Australian government organizations, she is participating in several research projects within the program.
