Profile

John Knox has taught in the Linguistics Department at Macquarie since 2000. From 1992 to 2000, he taught EFL in the English Department at Rangsit University, Thailand, and was Head of Graduate Studies in the English Department at Rangsit from December, 1999 to June, 2000. He has also taught on EFL and ESP programs at Kasetsart University, Mahidol University, and Mahidol University International College in Thailand; and has taught EAP at Macquarie University and the University of Sydney.

John completed a Master of Applied Linguistics by distance from Macquarie University, and is near completion of his PhD research at the University of Sydney, examining the multimodal discourse of online newspapers. In addition to his PhD research, his current and recent research projects include:

  • an investigation of the discourse of Thai newspapers (with Pattama Patpong and Yupaporn Piriyasilpa)
  • an investigation of language-teacher education by distance (with David Hall)
  • classroom-based research into the pedagogic application of Systemic Functional Linguistics by language teachers (with Anne Burns).

His primary academic interests are in the broad areas of:

  • language in education
  • Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL)
  • multimodality
  • media discourse.

He is a member of the Applied Linguistics and Language in Education (ALLE) Research Centre, and of the Centre for Language in Social Life (clsl).

John has supervised research projects in curriculum development and implementation; pedagogic discourse in face-to-face and online contexts; and language assessment. He is particularly interested in supervising research where Systemic Functional Linguistics is used as an analytical tool.

In addition to research supervision, John teaches on a number of units in Macquarie’s Postgraduate Programs in Applied Linguistics. His teaching and convening responsibilities in 2008 are:

  • convenor and lecturer for LING936 (Context, Use and Analysis of English - distance and on-campus), a unit which focuses on the globalisation of English, and Systemic Functional Linguistics

  • convenor and lecturer for LING938 (Innovation in Language Curriculum Development - distance and on-campus), a unit which focuses on curriculum development

  • convenor and lecturer for LING906 (Language Testing and Evaluation - on-campus), a unit which focuses on language assessment.
