Profile

Michael came to linguistics after a long career in the computer industry, where he developed methods for planning and writing advanced technical documentation. He teaches in undergraduate units in general and systemic-functional linguistics, and in the Business Communication Skills unit of the BBA program. He is also undergraduate Writing Skills Advisor, and teaches in the Student Writing Skills programs.
Michael’s chief interest is in the discourse analysis of written texts, and particularly in business and technical writing. His current major research project is an investigation of written complaints and responses, seeking to identify the effects of a company’s business methods and organisational culture on how it handles complaints.
