ProfileRobert Mannell has had a broad university education covering areas such as chemisty, biochemistry, psychology, computing, media studies, and linguistics. His honours research was on the evaluation of speech synthesisers and his PhD research examined auditory processing of speech using a combination of computer modelling and human perceptual research. Dr Mannell currently carries out research in the areas of phonetics and phonology, speech synthesis, auditory processing of speech, speech perception, speech acoustics and the evaluation of speech technology. Dr Mannell has been the recipient of numerous research grants and industrial contracts. Dr Mannell is heavily involved in the Department's teaching program. He convenes two degrees, the Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences and the Master of Speech and Language Processing. He also convenes numerous units in the fields of phonetics and phonology, speech acoustics, speech physiology, speech technology, auditory physiology and psychoacoustics. Dr Mannell has been the recipient of numerous teaching development grants, most recently a Macquarie University "Flagship" grant on the teaching of phonetic transcription. Dr Mannell has also had a long term involvement in university administration, having been involved in many committees and working parties at departmental, school and division level and has sat on a number of central University committees (especially in the areas of equipment, IT and computing). He has also, for many years, been involved in the Speech, Hearing and Language Research Centre as its Deputy Director. |
