Profile

Stephen Moore has worked in the fields of English language teaching and TESOL teacher education since 1990, and has lived and taught in Japan, Cambodia and Vietnam. His interest in critical linguistics led to Master and PhD research on the language of The Economist magazine and issues of power, ideology and point of view. He worked as a senior researcher in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) Research Centre prior to formally joining the Dept of Linguistics in 2006. He co-convenes the Master of Applied Linguistics program.

Stephen teaches and convenes LING 904 (Pragmatics), LING 944 (Current Issues in Language Testing and Evaluation) and LING 978 (Discourse Analysis) and also teaches on LING 906 (Language Testing and Evaluation), LING 925 (Languages for Specific Purposes), and LING 938 (Curriculum Innovation in Language Teaching). He supervises a number of doctoral and masters students principally investigating TESOL-related topics.

Stephen is currently researching English in Cambodia; the spoken discourse of accountants; and the teaching of applied linguistic sub-disciplines. He is also a member of a Carrick Institute award team investigating the development of English in international students at Australian universities.

Stephen is an editorial board member of several journals and is an advisor to the CamTESOL organisation in Cambodia. He is also a member of the Linguistics Department’s Centre for Language in Social Life (CLSL) and the Applied Linguistics and Language in Education (ALLE) Research Group.
