Profile

Elizabeth Ramirez is a lecturer in Interpreting and Translation studies and the Coordinator of the Interpreting Practicum for the Masters in Translation and Interpreting Program. She has extensive experience as a freelance and court interpreter of over 15 years. Elizabeth has also gained ample experience as a freelance translator and has been involved in a number of projects that have culminated in published translations.

Elizabeth is a training consultant with the Department of Health's Health Care Interpreter Service where she conducts professional development courses for practicing interpreters in interpreting techniques, ethics, note-taking, group interpreting, language consolidation and advanced interpreting skills. She has been engaged as a training consultant with the HCIS for over a decade now.

Her research interests and expertise are in the areas of medical interpreting, translation into a second language and bilingualism. Elizabeth co-authored the NLLIA Spanish Language Profile in Australia (1996) and is also co-author of Maintaining a Community Language: A case study of Hispanic teenagers (2004). She has also published a number of papers in international journals.

Elizabeth has recently submitted her doctoral thesis on medical interpreting and is currently involved in a project to develop two specialist teaching units on legal interpreting and Medical interpreting based on authentic discourses and data.
