Profile

Jan joined the Linguistics Department as a full-time lecturer in January 2002. However, he has had a long-standing association with the department, in addition to being an honorary associate from 1997 to 2001. From 1991 to 1998, he was a senior lecturer in Linguistics in the Department of Literature and Language at the University of the South Pacific, in Suva , Fiji . During this time, he conducted a large scale language use and attitude survey which formed part of his PhD, and was lucky enough to travel extensively throughout the South Pacific as part of his teaching duties. From 1977 to 1990, Jan lectured at Sydney University in Linguistics and English language in the English Department, the graduate Diploma in TEFL and the Linguistics Department.

He is currently co-ordinator of postgraduate coursework programs in Applied Linguistics, convenor of LING905 (Research Methods for Language Study), LING934 (Dissertation Part A), LING935 (Dissertation Part B), and co-convenor of LING914 (Lexicography) and TRAN825 (Bilingual Lexicography). Jan is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Macquarie Dictionary.

His research interests include: descriptive and general linguistics, varieties of English, Fiji English, lexicography, sociolinguistics, language use and attitudes, historical linguistics, toponymy.
