Profile

Before joining the AMEP Research Centre as a postdoctoral fellow, Agnes completed her MA in English with Language and Linguistics at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and her MA and PhD in Linguistics from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Her PhD thesis examines the uses of pragmatic devices such as like and or something by non-native speakers of New Zealand English in terms of frequency and functions. The research involved a detailed discourse analysis of the data as well as considerations of L1 interference and accommodation to the interlocutor as factors potentially influencing non-native uses of these forms. Throughout her studies, Agnes has been involved in tutoring for a range of undergraduate Linguistics courses.

Agnes’ main research interests lie within the field of sociolinguistics, in particular cross-cultural and interlanguage pragmatics, the use of vague language and the connections between language and identity.
