Addressing the ongoing English language growth of international students |
![]() |
Two of our ALLE members, Stephen Moore and Eva Bernat, and three other Macquarie staff, Prof. Denise Murray, Prof. Ingrid Piller, and Jen Tindale, are among many researchers from across 5 Australian universities, involved in a 2-year Carrick Institute funded ($219,000) research project titled “Assessing the ongoing English language growth of international students”.
The aim of this project is to build capacity within Australian universities to address the ongoing needs of their changing cohort of students and benefit from this in terms of greater internationalization. Macquarie’s involvement has been given full support by our Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost), Prof. Judith Sachs.
Specifically, this large-scale national cross-sectional study aims to address the on-going English language needs of international students, improve learning outcomes, support institutions in intercultural learning, and ultimately secure Australia’s position within the international education community.
In Semester 2, 2008, quantitative data (online survey questionnaires) and qualitative data (focus groups and interviews) will be gathered by the following participating universities:
Two major deliverables will be produced by the research team: a CD ROM for students and a teaching resource for academic staff. These publications will provide tangible evidence of Australian Universities addressing the needs of their students at a period when the evaluations of students’ learning experiences is seen as critical to institutional success.
