Projects - Plain English in Translation (PET) |
![]() |
This research is being conducted by Dr Mira Kim and Professor Anne Burns in collaboration with the NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service (MHCS), a government organisation which provides information and services to assist health professionals to communicate with non-English speaking communities throughout New South Wales.
Research aims
The research aims to investigate two specific questions:
- Do public documents written in plain English improve readability?
- If so, do they improve translatability and lead to improved readability of translations
The project is expected to yield a number of concrete outcomes. First, it will enhance the study of plain English by identifying linguistic sources for plain English writing through the analysis of multi-lingual texts. Second, it will provide empirical evidence regarding the relationship between the quality of source and target (translated) texts. Finally, these findings based on critical and empirical evidence from analysis of texts and target readers reactions to the texts will then be transferred into practical guidance to improve the readability of English texts and their translations.
