Dr Eva Bernat

Eva has extensive experience in language teaching and language teacher education from Australia and Europe. She has been a lecturer and researcher in TESOL and SLA since 2001. Her topics of interest cover:

  • the role of affect, gender, and personality traits in language learning;
  • teacher and learner beliefs in language learning/teaching;
  • teacher development (native/non-native, pedagogical and psychological aspects);
  • intercultural pragmatics;
  • second/foreign language teaching methods;
  • theoretical perspectives on language acquisition (psycho-cognitive, socio-cultural, constructivist, ecological, etc.)    

Currently, Eva is involved in a 2-year Carrick grant research project with 5 other Australian universities, investigating the English language growth of international students. She is also the Administrator for the ALLE Research Centre.

Dr Bronwen Dyson

Bronwen Dyson’s research focuses on the learning and teaching of ESL from a psycholinguistic perspective. Her current research includes:

  • Developmental stages and inter-learner variation in grammatical acquisition
  • The roles of language processing and universal grammar in second language acquisition
  • Learner-oriented assessment, curriculum and methodology
  • Form-meaning interfaces, particularly Focus on Form and form-meaning mapping in acquisition
  • The learning of written academic discourse

In recent years, Bronwen has taught Second Language Acquisition and language curriculum and methodology at masters level, while also contributing to course development for the Doctorate of Applied Linguistics. Previously, she lectured in General Linguistics at undergraduate level, conducted research into language policy, created language curricula materials and taught ESL at adult and secondary levels.

Dr John McAndrew

John McAndrew has been a Lecturer with the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie since 2003. Previous to coming to Macquarie, Dr McAndrew worked as a teacher and researcher in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), living and working in Japan, South Korea and Columbia.

Dr McAndrew’s research is ongoing in the broad areas of TESOL, ideology and online learning. Currently this includes

  • co-writing of the book Focus on discourse, which discusses the implications of a discourse-based approach to pedagogy
  • writing of the book Analysing ideology, which explores the relevance of intertextuality, heteroglossia and systemic functional linguistics to the analysis of ideology;
  • joint research into instability in online learning environments with the Centre for Studies in Educational Technology (CSET) in The Open University, England.

Mr Paul Moore

Paul Moore's research interests include the following:

  • sociocultural theory (SCT) and Activity theory (AT) perspectives in second language acquisition (SLA)
  • task-based language learning and teaching (TBLL&T)
  • computer-assisted language learning (CALL)
  • emerging technologies in distance education
  • L1 Japanese EFL learners

    Paul has been involved in English language education in capacities ranging from teaching to curriculum design and teacher education since 1989. His
    PhD involves classroom task-based research in a Japanese undergraduate EFL curriculum. Most recently he has been teaching on the postgraduate TESOL
    programme and in Learning Development at the University of Wollongong.

Malcolm Sim

Malcolm Sim is interested in the fields of applied linguistics and psychology and how they interact in TESOL contexts. He has a strong interest in second language acquisition (particularly the role of affective factors), multilingualism, learner autonomy, learner beliefs, e-learning and curriculum design. His current PhD research looks at ways in which language learner anxiety can be more efficiently managed to provide better language learning outcomes.

Malcolm began his language teaching career in Tokyo, Japan in 1998. During his four and a half years in Japan he made use of his business education to conduct corporate training classes and organize business English classes. He taught at a number of institutions with a variety of students of all ages. Since returning to Australia in 2003 to continue his studies at Macquarie he has worked at the National Centre of English Language Teaching and Research (NCELTR) on a wide range of courses.
