Style Council 2007 - Conference Report

Style Council 2007 took the theme "Australian usage and style: language description and commentary", was held in Hobart on Saturday 12 May, dovetailing with the National Editors conference at Wrest Point Convention Centre.

Keynote speaker: Dr Bruce Moore (Australian National Dictionary Centre, ANU) discussed the Tasmanianisms in the first and forthcoming second editions of the Australian National Dictionary.

Other invited papers:

Dr Bernadette Hince's topic was "antarctic lexicography", on which she has published the only dictionary.
Dr Danielle Wood (University of Tasmania) discussed the language of place in her novels.

Other papers offered discussed the different approaches of language columnists in Australia's major newspapers; the norms of using commas with adjunct phrases, in Australian newspapers; and millennial changes in Australian style.
