Since the early 1990's the Department of Linguistics has extensively developed postgraduate level courses in distance-mode, and is now increasingly engaged in online-mode delivery of its postgraduate coursework programs nationally and worldwide.
Its innovative professional doctoral program - the Doctorate in Applied Linguistics - is delivered entirely online. Several postgraduate programs are also available entirely by distance, including all of the Applied Linguistics programs, the Communication in Professions and Organisations programs, the MSc in Speech and Language Processing, the Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL, and the Postgraduate Certificate in Editing and Publishing.
Currently, the Department has over 900 graduate level students, either studying on campus or in over 35 countries worldwide. The Department maintains its own Linguistics Postgraduate Office, whose staff administer its postgraduate courses, maintain close administrative supervision of its coursework and research students, and offer support to its diverse postgraduate student body.
The distance programs of Linguistics were chosen by the University as the major component of the Macquarie Borderless University project and many individual units are now available on-line.
