About the DRC
The Macquarie University Dictionary Research Centre was established in 1986 to promote systematic research in lexicography, lexicology, Australian English and English usage in general. It is associated with the Department of Linguistics, within the Division of Linguistics & Psychology, and its director is Professor Pam Peters.
Its domains of activity cover a variety of lexical projects including:
- researching of spoken and written English grammar
- building corpora (databases) of spoken, written and digital texts
- conducting surveys on Australian and international English usage
- contributing research and writing for dictionaries and style manuals
- running regular seminars, workshops and conferences
- publishing conference proceedings and a biannual newsletter, Australian Style
- acting as consultants in areas such as language style and usage, dictionary-making, legal linguistics, Plain English
- developing online teaching units in Lexicography: monolingual ( LING 914 ) and bilingual ( TRAN 825 )
Affiliations
- The Dictionary Research Centre (DRC) provides research backup for successive editions of the Macquarie Dictionary
- DRC and Style Council Centre combine in supporting conferences and publications
- DRC currently hosts the secretariat for AUSTRALEX (Australasian Association for Lexicography)
