Scottish and English Lexicography

November 29, 6-7.15 pm

Ms Macleod's presentation will feature the Scottish contribution to English lexicography, with reference to:

  • early Scottish dictionaries, including Jamieson's
  • Imperial Dictionary (Century Dictionary in the US)
  • Chambers dictionaries
  • Collins dictionaries
  • the Oxford English Dictionary (with its two Scottish editors)
  • Dictionary of American English (edited by W A Craigie).

She will also discuss how the Scottish dictionaries grew out of work on the OED, and current cooperation with it.
