Bilingual (E-J) Dictionaries for Japanese learners of English

June 25, 6-7.15 pm

Professor Nishide's presentation will show how English-Japanese bilingual dictionaries are tailored to particular levels of learner, and embody features unmatched by other English bilingual dictionaries, in their coverage of grammatical structure and idioms, and their use of illustrative sentences and cultural notes. The history of Japanese bilingual dictionaries will be surveyed, and the influence on them of American and British monolingual lexicography. This long and rich tradition of lexicography feeds into the English-Japanese learner's dictionary. Current and future trends in English-Japanese dictionaries will be reviewed, especially their enlargement, and the transition to hand-held e-dictionaries. The talk will be illustrated with samples from a range of dictionaries, including the Super Anchor English--Japanese Dictionary, published by Gakken, to which Professor Nishide contributed.

Venue: Macquarie University, Building W5C 221
