Linguistics graduate wins 2008 IELTS Research Award
Macquarie graduate, Susan Clarke, has won the annual IELTS award “for the Master's-level dissertation or thesis in English which makes the most significant contribution to the field of language testing.”Susan’s dissertation, Investigating Interlocutor Input and Candidate Response in the IELTS Speaking Test: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Approach, was completed as part of her studies in Macquarie’s Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL).
Her research examined the impact of the interlocutor (or interviewer) on candidate performance in the IELTS Speaking Test, and was based on a comprehensive discourse analysis of two recorded IELTS interviews from a test specimen package. The research generated valuable findings about the reliability of the revised IELTS Speaking Test (both the scripted and unscripted parts of the test), and about the content validity of the test.
Congratulations to Susan on this exceptional achievement.
