Patient-Professional Interaction in Clinical Settings in Audiology

Research Students’ Innovation

This interdisciplinary study, undertaken to expand the scope of the Audiology program at Macquarie University, has introduced the field of Discourse Analysis to that of Clinical Audiology. The findings from this study inform: clinical practice, funding models for the profession, clinical education, and management of audiology clinics. Responsiveness of audiologists to patients and to the clinical context is identified as a key marker of professionalism and experience. A model for explaining the significance of advising patients was developed. As an innovation for the field of audiology, this model can serve as a tool for reflexive practice and thereby positively influence outcomes for patients.
