Doctorate in Applied Linguistics Begins in Mexico!

The Department's professional doctorate program, the Doctorate in Applied Linguistics, has taken another big step forward with the beginning of delivery of the program to university colleagues in Mexico. Following a good deal of very productive discussion and agreement with Mexican university authorities, especially at the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla - where the program will be delivered initially - involving Associate Professor Geoff Brindley from the Department, and Professor Anne Burns as Dean of Division, the first intensive teaching of the units in the professional doctorate will begin in February. The first units will be taught in Puebla in Mexico by David Hall and Chris Candlin in February, to be followed by units taught there by Anne Burns and Professor Kathi Bailey (from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California) in mid year, and then units by Geoff Brindley and Professor Steven Ross (from Kwansai Gakuin University in Japan) in September 2005.
Students on the course come from staff at Puebla, but also from other universities in Mexico, so that the program has a national coverage, and are supported by Mexican government and local university funding. Following the teaching of the initial face-to-face units, students will continue to follow the doctorate program in online mode, joining colleagues already registered on the program from a range of countries.
We are very excited about this new initiative for 'Macquarie Worldwide", and we look forward to the possibility of establishing other such arrangements with universities and educational systems overseas. It is especially exciting for us in the department that we can link our Macquarie Linguistics staff members as teaching partners with highly regarded colleagues from other institutions internationally.
