australex 2009 : innovations in lexicography

Dianne Bardsley, President of Australex, reports on this year's conference.

The 2009 Australex Conference hosted by Macquarie University on November 16 and 17 attracted a range of papers relating to the theme “Innovations in Lexicography”.

The two-day conference began with a plenary presented by Ilan Kernernan of K Dictionaries of Tel Aviv, who summarised the innovations in learner dictionaries over several years, with a particular focus on the recent developments in bilingual learner dictionaries. The papers that completed the programme for the first day ranged from innovative methodology and the benefits of electronic resources, to the production and presentation of new lexicographical products, including online termbanks, subject-specific lexis, and reflecting on dictionary publishing in a digital wonderland. The day's programme finished with a generous reception and address at the Macquarie Dictionary Centre at the University of Sydney.

The second day's programme was principally concerned with innovative lexicographical practice in languages other than English, with a plenary on the challenges of producing an online dictionary in sign language. The programme was concluded in innovative fashion with a debate/discussion on National vs International Lexicography and a reflection on what makes a national dictionary.
