Congratulations

A word or two from our students

Canadians Tim Allan and Melodie Cook are distance mode Doctor of Applied Linguistics candidates teaching in Nagasaki, Japan at Kwassui Women's College and Siebold University of Nagasaki, respectively.  They are also part of the executive committee for the Nagasaki chapter of JALT, the Japan Association for Language Teaching. They are happy to announce that their chapter has entered the world of Facebook, and invite anyone in the extended Macquarie community to join their new Nagasaki JALT and Friends Facebook Group - all welcome! Nagasaki has had some interesting connections over the years with Macquarie. Another executive committee member is Linguistics graduate Fumiko Ishinuki, and a past chapter member and presenter is current faculty member, John McAndrew. The chapter members were also very pleased to host Anne Burns here in 2000 and 2001, and hope to do something similar in the future. Besides Facebook, you can find more information about them at their websites at http://jalt.org/groups/Nagasaki and http://www.kyushuelt.com/jalt/nagasaki.html or sign up for their monthly e-mail newsletter at http://www.kyushuelt.com/jalt/nagamail.php3

PhD student Jenny Eagleton adds her congratulations to our Linguistics Postgraduate Office team for their recent award (see award details above) but has also pointed out something interesting. Jenny writes:

If other LINGLINE readers wish to share ideas and stories, please email the editor tessa.green@ling.mq.edu.au

Editing and Publishing course now professionally accredited

The Editing and Publishing program within the Linguistics Department has been officially endorsed by the Australian Publishers Association (APA), with the accreditation of the Postgraduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing.

The APA accreditation scheme was established only in 2007. It consists of a review of all units delivered in the program against a set of benchmarks laid down by the APA for the training of publishing professionals.

The Macquarie University program was commended for its comprehensiveness and the up-to-dateness of its curriculum. The Postgraduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing includes both electronic editing and e-publishing, to prepare its graduates for the now frequent demand for editing/publishing professionals to work in both print and electronic media.

Macquarie's Postgraduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing is one of only two such courses accredited in Australia, the other being located at RMIT University in Melbourne.

The accreditation of the Postgraduate Diploma program is good news also for the Postgraduate Certificate in Editing, which consists of the same four editing units as are taken by students in the Diploma (i.e. LING961/2/3/4). The Postgraduate Certificate is available both on campus and online.

New Publications

From Peter Lang AG - http://www.peterlang.com

Developing Academic Literacies: Understanding Disciplinary Communities' Culture and Rhetoric. Series Title: Contemporary Studies in Descriptive Linguistics. Volume 4.: 2007. Author: Dmitra Koutsantoni.
Book URL: http://www.peterlang.com/Index.cfm?vLang=E&vSiteID=4&vSiteName=BookDetail%2Ecfm&VID=10575

This book combines a social constructionist view of academic writing with a pedagogical orientation seeking to explore the dialogic relationship between the culture of academic discourse communities and their rhetoric, and provide a comprehensive analysis of variation across disciplines, genres and national intellectual cultures. The analysis focuses on the rhetorical organisation of research genres and the resources that convey authors' epistemic and attitudinal stance. The findings form the basis for the design of socio-culturally oriented learning materials for the teaching of writing in the disciplines and the development of academic literacies.

The Cognitive Linguistics Reader. Editors: Vyvyan Evans, Benjamin K. Bergen and Jörg Zinken. Series: Advances in Cognitive Linguistics, edited by Vyvyan Evans, University of Brighton, Benjamin K. Bergen, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Jörg Zinken, University of Portsmouth.

Cognitive Linguistics is the most rapidly expanding school in modern Linguistics. It aims to create a scientific approach to the study of language, incorporating the tools of philosophy, neuroscience and computer science. Cognitive approaches to language were initially based on philosophical thinking about the mind, but more recent work emphasizes the importance of convergent evidence from a broad empirical and methodological base. The Cognitive Linguistics Reader brings together the key writings of the last two decades, both the classic foundational pieces and contemporary work. The essays and articles - selected to represent the full range, scope and diversity of the Cognitive Linguistics enterprise - are grouped by theme into sections with each section separately introduced. The book opens with a broad overview of Cognitive Linguistics designed for the introductory reader and closes with detailed further reading to guide the reader through the proliferating literature. The Cognitive Linguistics Reader is both an ideal introduction to the full breadth and depth of Cognitive Linguistics and a single work of reference bringing together the most significant work in the field.

The journal further aims to encourage dialog and develop synergy across disciplines and levels of education around the issues and practices of writing. With these aims in mind, W&P solicits articles focused on K-12 and college/university writing in English, language arts, and other disciplines.
