The Linguistics Department at Macquarie University has extensive experience in delivering programs in Applied Linguistics. More than 1000 students (from 30 countries) have completed or are currently completing courses in the area of Applied Linguistics, either on campus or by external mode, throughout Australia and overseas.

The Master of Applied Linguistics, Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate programs in Applied Linguistics are intended for practitioners in a variety of professions whose work is concerned with applied language study. They offer the opportunity for students to specialise in one or more areas of Applied Linguistics from a common basis of descriptive and empirical training.

The Master, Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics programs are offered in 3 specialisations:

  • General Applied Linguistics
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
  • Language for Specific Purposes (LSP)

The number of credit points required for completion of a degree is as follows:

  • Master - 32 credit points
  • Postgraduate Diploma - 24 credit points
  • Certificate - 12 credit points.

All subject units are 4 credit points.

Minimum completion time is one year full-time or two to three years part-time for the Masters and one year full-time or two years part-time for the Postgraduate Diploma. Minimum completion time for all Postgraduate Certificates is one semester (6 months) full-time or one year part-time.

These programs are designed for language professionals working or aiming to work in the areas of teaching, curriculum development, literacy education, assessment and program evaluation, bilingualism, teacher education, policy development, management, or community service where language and communication are critical issues.
