Postgraduate Certificate of TESOL

 

This course is designed for newcomers to TESOL. It provides course participants with an understanding of the linguistic and sociocultural bases for second/foreign language learning, teaching and professional training in various aspects of TESOL. It includes the methodologies of teaching English as a second/foreign language to adults; the knowledge to select and prepare materials for TESOL; and the professional understanding to guide students and their learning of English.

Your Macquarie University Postgraduate Certificate of TESOL qualification is the gateway to many exciting opportunities for a professional TESOL career!

  • TEACHING

Teach in an English language college (ELICOS) or for an AMEP (Australian Migrant English Program) provider in Australia with your recognised university degree and your Macquarie University TESOL certificate qualification. Please check requirements here.


Teach in a NSW primary or secondary school as an ESL specialist under the Department of Education and Training (DET). Teachers currently qualified to teach in DET schools and who are registered with the NSW Institute of Teachers are able to apply to the institute for their Macquarie University TESOL certificate to be recognised. *


Teach in a primary or secondary school in other states and territories, or New Zealand. Please check potential teacher registration bodies (Australia; New Zealand) regarding specific requirements.


Teach in schools and colleges overseas. Although there is no recognised international accrediting body for the TESOL industry, Macquarie University's excellent reputation in the field of TESOL and Applied Linguistics has helped holders of the Postgraduate Certificate of TESOL gain teaching positions in many overseas contexts.


* Teachers accredited at Professional Competence with the NSW Institute of Teachers can apply to have postgraduate studies recognised by the Institute as contributing to the professional development requirements for maintaining that accreditation.   • FURTHER STUDY

 Completion of the Postgraduate Certificate of TESOL offers you the opportunity to continue your studies at postgraduate level with credit for the two coursework units. Further information on these programs can be found at these links:

Postgraduate Diploma of Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in TESOL
Master of Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in TESOL (upon completion of the Postgraduate Diploma of Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in TESOL).

The Postgraduate Certificate of TESOL is an integrated qualification within our postgraduate TESOL programs. Providing you achieve a GPA of 3.0 or above, you can articulate into the Postgraduate Diploma of Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in TESOL and receive 8cps towards the Diploma. From there, you can continue your studies to Masters Level and receive full credit from the Diploma towards the Masters.

Course requirements: 2 coursework units of 4 credit points each
1 practicum unit involving:
10 hours of classroom observation
10 hours of face-to-face supervised English language teaching
Admission requirements: An undergraduate degree or equivalent.

Applicants whose native language is not English will have to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. 

For the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and overall score of 6.5 is required with a minimum score of 6 in each of reading, writing, listening and spoken components.

For the TOEFL (paper) test a minimum of 53 listening, 51 structure/writing, 52 reading, 5.0 TWE and the total score of at least 580 is required.
   
For TOEFL (computer) test a minimum of 19 listening, 19 structure/writing, 19 reading, 5.0 TWE and the total score of at least 237 is required.
