Postgraduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing
The Postgraduate Diploma is a professional program accredited by the Australian Publishers Association, for editors and others engaged in the publishing industry, journalism or in any publications work within the public sector. Established in 1989, the program is taught in consultation with representatives of the Australian Publishers Association and the NSW Society of Editors, while drawing on university expertise. It is designed for those with some experience of publishing work (though not necessarily in the publishing industry), and aims to widen and deepen students' professional skills across the range of publishing: books, magazines and electronic media; general, trade, academic and government. The course is conducted part-time over twoyears, in the evening (7-9pm)*.
Eligibility: Undergraduate degree with 3-4 years experience in editing or publishing. Consideration given to applicants who have 7 or 8 years relevant experience but do not hold an undergraduate degree.
Within the Diploma, the work in editing and publishing is about equal, with one unit in each semester. A one-week practicum placement to provide experience of a different domain of publishing from the student's own is a feature of the course, arranged in their second year. The four editing units of the Diploma are identical to those of the Postgraduate Certificate in Editing.
For 2010 it is only possible to commence with the Certificate units (in distance mode); the Diploma units are not available to commence until 2011 when they will be available part-time on campus in the evening. Starting the Postgraduate Diploma in 2010 would therefore take three part-time years to complete.
