Postgraduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing
The Postgraduate Diploma is a professional program accredited by the Australian Publishers Association, for editors and others engaged in the publishing industry, journalism or in any publications work within the public sector. Established in 1989, the program is taught in consultation with representatives of the Australian Publishers Association and the NSW Society of Editors, while drawing on university expertise. It is designed for those with some experience of publishing work (though not necessarily in the publishing industry), and aims to widen and deepen students' professional skills across the range of publishing: books, magazines and electronic media; general, trade, academic and government.
Eligibility: Undergraduate degree with 3-4 years experience in editing or publishing. Consideration given to applicants who have 7 or 8 years relevant experience but do not hold an undergraduate degree.
The program is designed to set the work of editing in a full theoretical and practical context, and to widen candidates' experience of editing beyond whatever type of publishing they are already associated with. The practicum unit is built into the course as a way of enlarging students' experience of the actual operations of publishing. A placement totalling 26 hours will be arranged for each student, at a publishing unit other than the one at which she or he is currently employed, to be taken in a block during one of the university recesses.
In 2011, the Postgraduate Diploma will be available full time as well as part time, made up of the four Certificate (editing) units and a further four publishing units (plus practicum The full-time study pattern for the Diploma taken in 2011 will be:
