Doctor of Philosophy

To be eligible for consideration for admission a candidate must normally possess either a Degree of Master by research, or a Degree of Bachelor with first-class or second-class honours division 1 from a recognised university or other tertiary institution, or other evidence of significant research ability. The minimum period of candidature is two years. For full-time candidates the maximum period is four years and for part-time candidates the maximum is eight years. The designation as a full-time or part-time candidate shall be made after an assessment of the extent of the candidate's commitments other than those related to the program of study.

The program of advanced study and research for the degree will culminate in the presentation of a thesis embodying the candidate's work. The program must be supervised either by a member of the full-time academic staff of the University or, in approved cases, by a permanent academic staff member who holds a joint appointment between the University and another appropriate institution. There is, however, provision for candidates to be permitted to carry out some of their program outside the University as field work, or as an external candidate. In addition, for external candidates, an associate supervisor will normally be appointed at the place of research. Before the thesis is submitted an on-campus attendance requirement of at least three months, sufficient part of which must be during the final phase of thesis preparation, must be fulfilled. In such cases the place of study and research must be approved by the University.
