Description

This unit focuses on the analysis of natural discourse; language as a system for meaning and wording; the relationship between language and its social context; and the constitution of different discourse types. The emphasis is on practical analytical skills, focusing on language data from participants' work and social contexts, integrating the study of lexis, grammar, discourse and pragmatics in a coherent theory of language in use.

Students will need to demonstrate how the content of the unit contributes to or can be incorporated into their proposed doctoral research area.
