This unit provides comprehensive training in research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, directed at Professional Communication generally and in specific sites. It incorporates three methodologies: linguistic/discoursal analysis of spoken and written texts; ethnographic analysis of professional speech communities; and social psychological analysis of the conditions of production and reception of workplace texts in different modalities. Outcomes include the upgrading of units studied at the masters level to the equivalence to that of a doctoral student.
This unit contains the following four strands:
i. Scope of Professional Communication research (2 cr. points)
ii. Research design in professional communication (4 cr. points)
iii. Communication issues in Professional Communication (2 cr. points)
iv. A detailed examination of the relevance of previous studies to proposed research areas (2 cr. Points)
Students prepare the research proposal for the subsequent dissertation component of the degree as part of this unit.
Students entering the Doctorate directly by means of taking the DPC units will not take this unit (they will take DPC971A).
