Description
This unit addresses issues relating to communication between professionals and their clients, with a particular focus on how a range of key concepts are reflected in the discourse in which they participate, and the linguistic or communicative choices that they make. We explore the sorts of communication strategies that might be employed effectively in a range of professional-client interactions. We use an experiential ‘total situation-focused’ approach, drawing on some principles of problem-based learning and the life experiences of the group. Central to the unit is a series of scenarios that allow us to explore the discourse issues across a wide range of professional-client interactions.
In this unit you will learn that understanding professional-client communication involves much more than an examination of words and syntax. For example, we will explore topics such as how conversations are managed, who takes control of a communicative interaction, and how issues such as fact, power and negotiation come into the picture. We will also consider some wider parameters: for example, the psycho-social, cultural and educational variables which affect individuals and, in turn, impact on their interactions.
