About the unit:
TRAN820 is a practical translation unit. This unit of study is designed to help students to achieve accuracy, efficiency and naturalness in translation work at professional level.
It presents various texts and genres for translation practice both from English and into English (no less than 1000 and up to 2000 words per week including practicum, with a total of around 20,000 words a semester), and is intended to help students to make a successful move from the university learning community to the community of professional translators. Issues encountered in the course of translation will be addressed and discussed from the perspective of cultural awareness, language usage, register, stylistics and text analysis, as well as equivalence at different levels. Translation strategies and techniques will be introduced, with the aim of encouraging students to learn to think like professional translators and to establish their own strategies to solve the problems.
Learning objectives:
By the successful completion of the unit, students are expected to have acquired the following skills:
- Identify and analyze translation problems in a variety of text types in a variety of topic areas;
- Devise appropriate strategies for tackling the problems;
- Apply the principles of translation to the solution of the problems.
- Develop and record your own translation strategies;
- Research and teamwork
- Further understand professional ethics issues
- Demonstrate graduate level of generic skills in self-reflection, interpersonal interaction, communication and critical analysis, problem-solving and creative thinking.
Structure of delivery:
4 hours of translation classes per week (2 hours each direction)
Unit materials: Materials in the following topic areas:
Politics, public administration, social and community affairs, law, commerce, economics, science and technology, health and medicine

with reflective journal (10%)
Translation Exam: 60%

You are required to present your own learning portfolio that shows your learning achievements in this unit at the end of the semester. Forms and contents may differ according to your preferences and learning goals but should include all the assignments, supplementary translation practice plus reflective journals.
