Description
This unit is a theoretical and practical-based course to examine and develop various techniques of interpreting from English into Auslan and from Auslan into English, with a focus on monologues. The content incorporates exploration of interpreting in different contexts, and various linguistic and practical coping strategies, through discussion and interpreting exercises. Online sessions will provide an opportunity to discuss theoretical aspects of interpreting, referring to both spoken and signed language interpreting literature, with application of theory to practice occurring during the on-campus sessions. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own interpreting experiences in order to analyse the relationship between theory and practice, and to recognise factors that influence the effective use of different interpreting techniques in different contexts, as well as the decision-making that is involved in selecting one interpreting technique over another.
The unit is delivered through a ‘blended approach’, combining online contact for the majority of the theoretical component, with on-campus attendance (‘blocks’) for the majority of the practical component of the course. This study guide provides you with all the necessary materials and information to enable you to access the theoretical component. The website provides you with regular tasks and interactive opportunities, and the on-campus sessions (blocks) provide you with the opportunity to apply theory to practice, via practical interpreting exercises.
In order to gain the most benefit from the course, students must be able to access a PC or Mac computer with up to date word processing and internet capabilities, a video camera, a TV and DVD player.
