The unit covers the principles that govern the compilation of dictionaries in order to enable the interpreter and translator to make optimal use of them in accomplishing their tasks. It also introduces students to basic concepts in word semantics.
Types of dictionaries as well as defining procedures will be discussed with practical lexicographical exercises. Special attention will be given to ways of achieving equivalence in bilingual dictionaries. The structure of the lectures will move from a moe theoretical standpoint in the first several weeks towards student seminars and more practical work in the second half of the unit.
Materials used in teaching include Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Oxford English Dictionary, bilingual dictionaries, the Barnhart Dictionary of Etymology, Macquarie Dictionary and Thesaurus, Longman Synonym Dictionary, Webster's New Dictionary of Synonyms
Class contact hours: 2 hours per week over one semester
Assessment
Your final grade for the unit will be given on the basis of the joint scores for assignments. The raw results will be processed to be a fraction of the total of 100, then grades will be assigned according to the table given below:
