TRAN826 Community Interpreting and Translating

Unit description
The unit focuses on the description, interpretation and explanation of discourse practices in situations where community interpreting and translating are required with particular emphasis on the links to be made between language, culture and organisational structures.

TRAN 826 Community Interpreting and Translating

The unit introduces participants to Community Based Interpreting (CBI) which encompasses any interpreting which takes place in everyday or emergency situations in the community. Interpreting may be undertaken in legal, health, education, social service and business settings. Background to the development of CBI will be discussed in both Australian and international contexts and the difficulty of defining CBI is explored.
Content

The course focuses on discourse analysis as a key to understanding the complexity of the role of interpreters. Associated with role, an understanding of the ethical problems involved and their implications for practitioners is encouraged. Guest speakers from the profession representing employers, researchers, and educators have been invited to share their experience in and expertise on CBI.

Class contact hours: 3 hours per week over one semester

Assessment
Your final grade for the unit will be given on the basis of the joint scores for assignments. The raw results will be processed to be a fraction of the total of 100, then grades will be assigned according to the table given below:
