Description
The unit is designed to introduce Masters candidates to techniques and methods of doing research. This goal will be achieved by students’ independent reading, by a mix of lectures, discussions in smaller groups and by students designing, carrying out and describing the results of a mini-project. Students will be assessed on the basis of the quality of the final essay. The main focus of the unit is on teaching students research methods in translation and interpreting by exposing them to “hands on” team research work. This will be done by means of two introductory lectures for all students enrolled in the unit, followed by a number of small group seminars working with experienced supervisors who will lead individual research projects. The particular orientation of the unit is on active participation of the students in the research process and the unit thus prepares them to design, implement and evaluate their own research.
As of 2008, all students enrolling in the T&I program will be required to complete a Translation & Interpreting Academic Writing Skills workshop. Workshops will be 3 hours long, and will be offered free to all T&I students. All students must take the responsibility to complete this workshop in their first semester. Certificates of attendance will be provided to all students on completion of the workshop.
Attendance requirements: 2 Weekly lectures and up to 11 weeks of seminars (determined by individual supervisors)
