Prerequisite:

A minimum GPA of 3 for postgraduate T&I units done prior to enrolment in Dissertation

Unit description

The unit requires students to undertake a specified supervised research task in any of the areas covered by core or optional units and submit a dissertation (not more than 15,000 words) presenting the results of the project.

There are no classes in this unit. However, every student enrolled in TRAN 830 should make an appointment with unit convener during week 1 to determine the topic of the dissertation and supervisor. Depending on the number of students taking a particular subject with the same supervisor, some specialized seminars may be organized.

It is the students' responsibility to deliver a properly printed and bound (hard covers) dissertation in time for the two readers to examine the work before the deadline for completions. Should you deliver your dissertation late, you cannot expect to graduate in the nearest ceremony. Please make sure you find out all the deadlines for the semester you are in from the Linguistics Postgraduate Office.

Assessment

Each student's dissertation will be assessed by two academics: the supervisor and an independent reader. The two examiners will then compare their notes and results and jointly determine the final grade. Every student will then obtain a copy of the examiners' reports, but not the grades given by each examiner. The final grade will be sent to the students the same way grades for other subjects are delivered: by mail and by access to the university website. Your final grade for the unit will be assigned according to the table given below:
