Unit Web Site |
The aim of this unit is to provide interpreting students with the opportunity to practice interpreting skills in linguistically sophisticated and potentially challenging arenas, which would be expected of them at professional Interpreter level. Areas to be covered include: working with a deaf relay interpreter, working with clients with ‘minimal language skills’, conference interpreting and coordinating, and executive/ diplomatic level interpreting; and we will also touch on International Sign Interpreting. Each topic area will concentrate on issues of working from Auslan-English, and English-Auslan. Weekly notes and readings will be devoted to analysis and discussion of literature in each of the topic areas, and on-campus sessions will focus on practical interpreting exercises involving live role-plays and working from video materials. Guest lectures will be given by NAATI accredited Auslan interpreters and deaf people with expertise in each of the areas. Students will be provided with the opportunity to participate in a mock-conference which will simulate the conference interpreting experience as closely as possible.
Attendance requirements: 1 x 3 day block + online
