The aim of this unit is to provide Auslan interpreting students with the opportunity to discuss and practice advanced interpreting skills in one specialized area of community interpreting, that is, legal interpreting. Students will analyse the complex linguistic, cultural and ethical challenges of interpreting in legal settings, with consideration given to a range of issues. Students will explore the theoretical foundations of the law, legal terminology and roles of various participants in the legal system, as well as interpretation issues faced specifically by Auslan interpreters.
Sessions will be devoted to explanation of the Australian legal system, analysis and discussion of literature in relation to legal interpreting, and practical interpreting exercises involving live role-plays of mock police interviews and working from video materials. In collaboration with Macquarie University’s Law Department, mock court hearings will be run in the Moot Court, which will allow students to experience interpreting in lifelike court situations. Sessions will be delivered through team teaching with lecturers from Law and Linguistics, and guest lectures from professionally accredited Auslan interpreters with expertise in legal interpreting.
