Seminar Title:  On the Variation of Gestural Overlapping as a Function of Speech Rate and Phonetic Context
Presenter(s):  Sidney Martin, University of Tarragona
Time:  1:00 pm, Monday 10th October, 2005
Place:  Forster Room, 5th floor C5A

This study explores how overlapping of the velum gesture with the tongue tip gesture corresponding to adjacent consonants varies as a function of speech rate and phonetic context. It is hypothesized that gestural overlapping varies as a function of these two factors. It is expected that the faster the speech rate, the more likely it is for gestural overlapping to occur, which in turn will vary as a function of phonetic context. In order to test this hypothesis an experiment has been designed in which aerodynamic measurements from two speakers of American English have been collected as an indirect technique for obtaining information of articulatory movement. Interestingly enough, results confirm the hypothesis, thus yielding valuable information about the mechanics of gestural overlapping.
