Quick Software Installation Instructions for Windows Users

  1. Are you using the CD-ROM version of the course materials?
  2. Is your computer running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP?
  3. Would you like concise instructions on how to quickly install the phonetic fonts, the preferred browser and the preferred sound player and you don't care whether this process changes some of your current settings?

System Requirements

You should read the page on "System Requirements", particularly if you answered NO to one or more of the three questions in the section above.

Phonetic Fonts

These pages display phonetic fonts using a technology known as "Unicode". Go to the Phonetic Fonts page for instructions on how to install the fonts and how to ensure that you can see all of the phonetic characters correctly. These pages also explain how to edit files using one of the supplied phonetic fonts.

Web Browser

It is essential that you have a web browser that is able to properly display the phonetic fonts. Go to the Web Browser page for instructions on how to install an appropriate browser.

Sound

Many of the pages on this site/cd-rom have attached sound files. Go to the Sound page for instructions on how to set up your computer to successfully play the sounds.

Movies

Some of the pages on this site/cd-rom may have attached movies. Go to the Movies page for instructions on how to set up your computer to successfully play the movies.

Printing

Printing from web pages is not always successful. You have been supplied with print formatted "PDF" files you are advised to use these files for printing using "Acrobat Reader". Go to the "Printing" page for instructions on how to install this software.
