System Requirements

Important Instructions

It is most important that you read all of this page before you begin to search through the contents of this CD-ROM.

System Requirements

1. Computer and Operating System: If you have an old machine (ie. more than 4 years old) or you are running an old operating system (eg. MS-DOS with Windows 3.1, or Windows 95) you will probably experience difficulties with some (or all) of the material on this CD-ROM. Many of the files will fail to load because you don't have enough memory. Further, on MS-DOS many of the filenames will not be recognised.

You will need to be running one of the following system configurations:-

Your machine must have a sound card installed. (Warning: Some PCs that come with built-in sound have faulty hardware and cut off the first quarter second of each sound clip - contact Robert Mannell if you think that the start of some sound clips are being cut off).

Of course, your machine must also have a CD-ROM drive.

If your machine fails to meet these requirements then you will not be able to use this CD-ROM and must request the alternative hard-copy material (see below).

2. Phonetic Fonts: You must have the correct phonetic fonts installed on your computer.

3. Web Browser: You must have a web browser that is able to correctly display the phonetic fonts.

4. Sound Software: You must have software that is able to play the sound files attached to this course material.

5. Acrobat Reader: For good quality and reliable printing, it is desirable that you have Acrobat Reader (or the full version of Adobe Acrobat) on your computer.

Alternative Materials

If your machine fails to meet these requirements then you will not be able to use this CD-ROM and must request any alternative course material that may be available for your unit.

Also, in some cases, even if you do have a computer that meets these requirements you may still be unable to set up your computer to view phonetic fonts, play sound or print PDF files. In such cases you should also read the instructions for obtaining the alternative course material.
