SLP813/814: Project in Speech and Language Processing I and II

Availability: Semesters 1 and 2
Credit Points: 4 per unit (total 8)
Convenor: Robert Mannell

Unit Description

In this unit you will undertake a major research project on a topic related to the course material. This project will result in a minor dissertation. Students will be encouraged to develop original ideas and implement working models where appropriate. Projects will most likely focus upon speech research, speech technology or natural language processing. Some projects will be experimentally based whilst some projects will involve the design and software implementation of some aspect of NLP or speech technology. Other types of project are also possible depending upon their relevance to the goals of this degree and the availability of supervisors. Students are encouraged to think creatively about possible projects and should discuss their project ideas with the unit covenor or with potential supervisors.

Students who commenced the degree BEFORE 2007 have the option of doing either a 4 credit point (SLP813) or an 8 credit point (SLP813 and SLP814) dissertation. All students who commence the degree in 2007 or later must complete an 8 credit point dissertation.

The recommended maximum length of a 4 credit point dissertation for the M.Sc. (Speech and Language Processing) degree is between 10,000 and 15,000 words words (approximately 60-70 pages of double-spaced typing).

Rules for the 8 credit point dissertation are still being formulated and the recommended length for such a dissertation will be posted here early in March 2007.

If you wish to include raw or partly processed data (eg. spectrograms, lengthy texts or transcripts) or software code which illustrates your implementation of a speech or NLP system, these are not considered part of the overall word count. They can be placed in appendices rather than within the body of the dissertation.

The "RESOURCE INDEX" link takes you to a page that provides links to a large number of on-line materials relating to Phonetics and Phonology and Speech Science (and to a much lesser extent, some aspects of hearing). The "HELP PAGES" link takes you to help pages that tell you how to install appropriate phonetic fonts (if required), installing a browser that properly supports phonetic fonts, as well as software for playing sound and video files.
