Postgraduate Distance Learning

Overview of distance learning: postgraduate

Linguistics at Macquarie has 16 postgraduate programs offered in distance mode. All of these degrees can be studied entirely by distance; in most cases it is also possible to transfer freely between the on-campus and distance modes. There are currently over 400 Macquarie Linguistics students studying postgraduate programs (coursework and research) by distance in over 30 countries in all parts of the world.

The programs offered by distance are the equivalent of their on-campus counterparts in their rigour, in the expectations upon students, and in the amount and quality of work required. Student assessment is completely based on the submission of assignments, which are marked and returned with feedback by teaching staff. There are no examinations, and there is no requirement to attend campus, except for PhD candidates, who must be on campus for a total of at least 6 months full-time (or equivalent) over the period of their candidature.

The status of degrees awarded to students who study by distance is equal in every respect to those awarded to students who study on-campus. Degrees and transcripts do not record the learning mode or modes, as the assessment procedures, level of achievement, and general expectations of students are the same regardless of the mode or modes by which they study.

Graduating students are welcome to attend their graduation ceremony at Macquarie; academic staff are always pleased to meet distance students. For students who cannot attend, degrees are conferred at the ceremony in absentia , and degrees and transcripts are sent to students by registered mail.
