Classes are held once a week for 2 hours and students are strongly encouraged to attend sessions 1 - 5 of the Writing Program in sequence. The first session for the Writing Program begins in Week 2 - Stream A commences on Tuesday 12 August and Stream B commences Wednesday 13 August. (Note - you choose either the Tuesday stream to enrol in OR the Wednesday stream. You do not need to attend both the Tuesday and Wednesday classes.)
Two special Speaking and Listening Skills Seminars will be held (dates to be advised). Seminar 1 will focus on strategies for learning English as a second/foreign language, and on aspects of English pronunciation. Seminar 2 will focus on the prosodic aspects of English, and will look at communication strategies, and issues of cultural context.
A series of Presentation Skills Workshops will be held over two consecutive sessions (dates to be advised). These workshops will focus on developing skills and confidence in public speaking. It is important that students attend both sessions.
This is a non-credit point program with no assessment and is free of charge to Linguistics Postgraduate Students. It is designed to help Linguistics students improve writing and communication skills while they are enrolled in postgraduate linguistics subjects.
To enrol in this program, please indicate which sessions you wish to attend (either the Writing Program stream A or B and/or the Speaking and Listening Skills Seminars and/or the Presentation Skills Workshops) by writing your name and contact details (including your phone number and email address) on the noticeboard outside Tessa Green's office in the Linguistics Department (Room C5A 530).
Places fill very quickly so you should enrol as soon as possible. These sessions are suitable for both native and non-native English speakers.
