The members of CTIR have a range of research interests that are consolidated within two central research themes:

Translator & Interpreter Competence

Projects that seek to investigate various linguistic, psychological and sociological factors that can impact on translator and interpreter competence, in terms of:

  • accuracy of translation or interpretation product
  • aptitude for translation or interpreting competence
  • cognitive load during the translation or interpreting process
  • visibility of translators and interpreters
  • consumer perceptions of translator and interpreter competence
  • communicative competence of translators and interpreters
  • translation and interpreting strategies and errors
  • corpus-based translation and interpreting studies
  • technical and resource support for translator and interpreter competence
  • comprehension of interpreted texts

Translation & Interpreting Pedagogy

Projects that seek to investigate various aspects of translation and interpreting pedagogy in formal education programs, professional development (continuing education), and assessment/testing, in terms of:

  • problem-based learning
  • action research
  • curriculum development/evaluation
  • social constructivist approaches to teaching
  • reliability of translator/interpreter testing
  • screening for entry into translation/interpreting programs
  • mentoring
  • teaching case studies
  • peer review and observation
  • use of technology in teaching
