Communication for Academic and Professional Purposes (CAPP)

Academic and Professional Communication Unit

Communication for Academic and Professional Purposes (CAPP)

The Academic and Professional Communication Unit (APCU) of the Linguistics Department provides a credit-bearing unit (CAPP100) that can be integrated into many different study patterns across Macquarie's programs. Developmental work on language skills is embedded in coursework designed to raise awareness and proficiency in academic and professional communication, while studying professional oriented subject matter.
APCU also offers a selection of non-credit courses, free language and communication workshops, and individual consultation services which are available to all Macquarie postgraduate and HDR students for whom English is an additional language.

The Academic and Professional Communication Unit (APCU) caters both to international and local students who have first or additional languages other than English. CAPP courses and other offerings are designed to equip such students with the language and communication skills, as well as the language-based learning skills, that they will need to get the most out of mainstream subjects while helping them succeed in their studies.

All CAPP teaching and curriculum is firmly grounded in research carried out in university settings. APCU-related staff are actively carrying out research into generic skills for university study as well as into discipline-specific academic discourses and both academic and professional genres. Their research is enhanced by their considerable international experience and inter-cultural sensitivity. Their research areas have been chosen to enhance their capacity to teach the language and communication skills needed by students in order to perform successfully in different departments within the university and, later on, in the professional workplace. These research activities often take the form of action research, in collaborative teaching and curriculum development, working with lecturers in a range of academic disciplines, or in the provision of special collaboratively designed adjunct courses. CAPP staff have a tradition or working closely with academics in different departments and centres across the Macquarie campus.
