Description

How does language create the society we have around us? And how does language create the possibilities for change in that society? Ling109 will introduce students to thinking about language in its social and cultural context, and as the basis of human communication. Questions of language attitudes and language behavior are discussed. A not-too-technical approach will be taken to contemporary issues such as language in the media, language as interaction, and communicative systems other than language – e.g., art, music, gesture. The course is organised around specific, small scaled tasks which, week by week, become the basis of assessment, along with a final report. The main aim of the course is to turn students into systematic and critical observers of language in different contexts.
