Description

This unit takes as its substance the various kinds of new electronic media, and examines them in terms of contrasting approaches to discourse. The weekly lecture / workshops will present a series of linguistic theories (including pragmatics, conversation analysis, generic structure theory, systemic functional theory, speech act theory), to

  1. examine the kinds of interaction that are taking place;
  2. establish which theoretical perspectives are most illuminating for the particular type of discourse, and
  3. identify the patterns of language and usage that are characteristic of the new media. Online discussion groups are a feature of the unit. Assessment is based on online participation, an online assignment, in class test and final essay.
